Automotive Trim Metallization Coater
DYSP PremiumChrome | A green, premium PVD chrome solution for automotive trim
From wet chrome plating to PVD chrome | The green transition of trim metallization
Chrome trim is a key element of automotive interior and exterior quality, found everywhere from grilles and emblems to air vent rings and center console trims. Conventional wet chrome plating of plastics requires etching, electroless plating and multiple plating baths, uses hexavalent chromium and generates large volumes of heavy-metal wastewater. As regulations such as EU REACH increasingly restrict hexavalent chromium, automakers and parts suppliers are actively seeking more environmentally friendly alternatives.
The Dah Young Vacuum DYSP series PremiumChrome Automotive Trim PVD Chrome Coater combines PVD vacuum coating with UV base and top coats to give plastic trim a metallic luster rivaling electroplating. The entire coating process is completed dry in vacuum, with no hexavalent chromium and no plating wastewater, and works with a wider range of plastic substrates, offering a trim metallization solution that balances premium appearance and environmental responsibility.
PremiumChrome coating system | UV base coat + PVD metal film + UV top coat
PremiumChrome builds a complete chrome coating from three layers:
● UV base coat: Levels the molded surface and provides a strong adhesion foundation and mirror gloss for the PVD metal film.
● PVD metal film: Metal deposited by vacuum sputtering or evaporation for a bright chrome or dark metallic look.
● UV top coat: Provides abrasion, chemical and weather protection for long-term appearance stability.
Reliability validation such as adhesion, damp heat, thermal cycling and corrosion resistance can be performed to automaker specifications for interior or exterior use.
Bright chrome × Dark metallic | Diverse design finishes
PremiumChrome offers two finish families, Bright chrome and Dark metallic, meeting design needs from classic chrome to stylish dark metallics, with tone and gloss adjustable to customer master samples. DYSP 1600 features Ar / O₂ dual gas flow control and can perform reactive sputtering.
In addition, semi-transparent metal films combined with laser-etched patterns achieve a day-night design effect—metallic by day, with backlit patterns shining through at night—for next-generation interior designs such as backlit button symbols and ambient light trims. DYSP 1300's indium-tin alloy sputtering forms a non-conductive metallic film, enabling development of metallic-look parts that require signal transmission, such as radar covers and touch panels, to product specifications.
Broad substrate compatibility | Not limited to plating-grade plastics
Wet plating of plastics is mostly limited to etchable plating-grade ABS or PC/ABS. PVD coating does not rely on chemical etching and works with PC/ABS, PC, ABS, PPE, PA, ASA, PC/PBT, BMC and many other automotive plastics, letting designers freely select materials based on heat resistance, impact resistance and cost.
Evaporation & sputtering dual-use × planetary rotation | Consistent appearance on 3D trim
The full DYSP series integrates thermal evaporation and magnetron sputtering in the same vacuum chamber, so customers can flexibly choose processes to suit appearance and film requirements. Vertical planetary fixtures coat curves, edges and styling details of 3D trim evenly for consistent color. DYSP 1800 additionally features 13.56 MHz RF plasma to clean and activate part surfaces before coating for stronger adhesion. DYSP 1600 uses a separate process chamber and load/unload chamber design that helps improve production efficiency.
High-efficiency pumping × automated operation | Stable mass production
DYSP combines an oil-sealed rotary pump, Roots booster, 40,000 L/s diffusion pump and holding pump into a complete pumping system with a cryopump, rapidly removing water vapor released by plastic substrates and UV base coats. A new, clean, empty chamber at room temperature reaches process vacuum within 5 minutes. A touchscreen HMI with PLC control stores multiple independent process recipes and provides full alarm protection, ensuring every batch of trim has a stable, consistent appearance.
